Altenburg, capital, the capital of the duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Germany, 24 miles south of Leipsic. It is an ancient but well-built town, with a cathedral, palace, picture-gallery, school of art, library, gymnasium, etc. A large trade is done in grain, cattle, horses, and books.
