Aardwolf

Aard-wolf, Proteles cristatus, a carnivorous mammal from South Africa. It is about the size of a fox, but with larger ears, longer legs, and a shorter and less bushy tail, and has an erectile mane along the middle of the neck and back. In colour and markings it resembles a young striped hyaena, from which, however, it may be readily distinguished by its long pointed head and a fifth claw on the fore feet. It is a nocturnal burrowing animal, feeding on carrion, larvae, and white ants.
