Wallace, Sir William. Born about 1274. Scotch hero. Headed the rising of 1297 against the English, and won a victory at Cambus Kenneth, after which he crossed the border, and was named guardian of Scotland on his return. Next year, however, Wallace was defeated by Edward I at Falkirk, after which, deserted by the nobles, he carried on a guerilla warfare for seven years. After being imprisoned in France, whose aid he had sought, Wallace was declared an outlaw in 1304, and was captured and set to London, where he was hanged in 1305.
