Winthrop, John. Governor of Massachusetts Colony. Born in Suffolk, England, 1588. Became a lawyer. Winthrop was chosen governor by Massachusetts Bay Company in 1629. Came to America with 900 others in 1630. Served as governor 1630-34, 1637-40, 1642-44, and 1646-49. His influence on the history of New England was very great. Died at Boston in 1649.
