Wolfe, James. A distinguished English general. Was born in Kent, 1727. After serving with high distinction during the Seven Years' War, Wolfe was appointed commander-in-chief of the army sent against the French in Canada, 1759, and fell, mortally wounded, in the moment of victory, on the plains of Abraham at Quebec. His opponent in command, the Marquis de Montcalm, was also carried from the field in a dying condition. This battle terminated the French possession of Canada.
