Van Dycke, or Vandyke, Sir Anthony. Eminent painter of the Flemish school, distinguished by his surpassing excellence in portraiture. Was born in Antwerp, 1599, and became a pupil of Rubens. In 1632, Van Dyck became court painter to Charles I of England, as knighted by that monarch, married a daughter of the Earl of Gowrie, and live in great magnificence. His greatest works were "Crucifixion" and his full-length picture of "Charles I on Horseback." Van Dyck died in London, 1641.
