Turenne, Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de. Born in 1611. French general, son of the Duc de Bouillon, and grandson of William I, Prince of Orange. Turenne entered the French army in 1630. Became marechal de camp in 1635. In 1643 was placed in command of the forces in Germany, where he remained until the close of the Thirty Years' War, distinguishing himself by his retreat from Marienthal and his victory at Nordlingen. Turenne opposed Conde with success in the war of the Fronde. Was made marshal-general in 1660. Became a Roman Catholic in 1668. Greatly distinguished himself in the war with Holland, in the course of which he was killed by a cannon shot in 1675.
