Tamerlane, Timur, or Timour. Surnamed "The Great," an Asian conqueror. Was born at Kesh in Independent Tartary, 1336. After subjecting to his arms Khorasan, Armenia, and the greater part of Persia, Tamerlane defeated the Bashkirs, took Bagdad and Damascus, subjugated Georgia, and advanced into Russia as far as Moscow.
