Trumbull, John. A distinguished American painter. Was born in Connecticut, 1756. After passing some time in the army, during which he acted a aide-de-camp to Washington, 1775, Trumbull became a pupil of Benjamin West in London. His principal works were placed in the rotunda of the Capitol at Washington, numbering among them "The Surrender of Cornwallis," "The Declaration of Independence," and "The Surrender of Burgoyne." Trumbull died in 1843.
