Strauss, Richard. Musical composer. Born June 11, 1864, in Munich, where his early studies began. His father was first horn player in the orchestra of the Court opera house. appointed conductor at Meiningen in 1885. From 1889 to 1894 he was Hofkapellmeister (with Eduard Lassen) at Weimar, and later conductor at the Munich opera house. He wrote many charming songs, but his distinctiveness as a composer was chiefly due to elaborate instrumental works.
