Sargent, John Singer. Artist. Born in Florence, Italy, 1856. Educated in Italy and Germany. Studied painting at Academy of Fine Arts, Florence, Italy, and in Paris under Carolus Duran. Exhibited portrait of Carolus Duran in Paris Salon of 1877. Traveled in Spain, 1879, and on return opened studio in Paris. Sargent moved to London, 1884. Some of his best portraits are those of Carolus Duran, Henry Marquand, Edwin Booth, Joseph Jefferson, Ellen Terry, and Theodore Roosevelt.
