Rodin, Auguste. Sculptor, president of international society of painters, sculptors, and engravers. Born of a poor family in Paris in 1840. At an early age, he displayed great taste for art. He studied under Barye and Carrier-Belleuse. At the age of 22, he modeled the "Man with a Broken Nose," one of the best of his works. He began to exhibit at the salon in 1875. In 1877 he exhibited "The Age of Bronze" which was purchased by the state, and is now in the Luxembourg gallery. Possibly the most elaborate of all his works is his "Portal of Hell" upon which he worked 20 years. It is a bronze door for the museum of decorative art, Paris. His works include: "Burgesses of Calais," "The Kiss," statue of Balzac, busts of Jean Paul Laurens, Victor Hugo, and many others. In 1900 the city of Paris erected a building in which most of his works were exhibited at the Paris exhibition. Died 1917.
