Prescott, William Hickling. American historian. Born in Salem, 1796. In spite of very bad eyesight, devoted himself to literature, and wrote "History of Ferdinand and Isabella," "The Conquest of Mexico," "Conquest of Peru," and "History of Philip II" (unfinished). Prescott died in 1859.
