Medici, Lorenzo de'. "Il Magnifico." Born in 1448. Son of Pietro, became dominant in Florence after the suppression of the Pazzi, by whom his brother, Giuliano, had been murdered in 1478. His alliance with Venice and Milan excited the jealousy of the papacy, and Sixtus IV excommunicated Florence on his account. He was reconciled, however, with Innocent VIII, and his son, Giovanni, was made cardinal. He was a great patron and collector of manuscripts. Died 1492.
