Hooker, Joseph (1814-1879), an American general. He was a native of Hadley, Massachusetts, and was graduated from West Point in 1837. He served with credit in the Mexican War. During the Civil War he rose to the command of the army of the Potomac. In 1863 he was sent to reinforce Rosecrans at Chattanooga. As commander of the army of the Cumberland he fought the so-called battle among the clouds on Lookout Mountain. He was known among his soldiers as "Fighting Joe Hooker."
