Harvard, John. Born in 1607. Son of a butcher in Southwark. Was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and in 1637 Harvard married and came to New England. Died the following year (1638), and left one-half of his estate to be devoted to the foundation of a college at Cambridge, MA, which subsequently became Harvard University.
