Garrison, William Lloyd (1805-1879), an American reformer and abolitionist, was born at Newburyport, Mass. After serving an apprenticeship as compositor, Garrison became editor of the Free Press, and later published The Liberator, which was devoted to the cause of anti-slavery. He was the organizer of the Anti-Slavery Society. After the close of the Civil War the publication of The Liberator was discontinued. Garrison's friends made up a purse of $30,000 to provide for his old age. A statue has been erected in his memory in Boston.
