Gorgas, William Crawford. Born in Mobile, AL, 1854. Educated at University of the South, and Bellevue Hospital Medical College, NY. Appointed surgeon, USA, 1880. Gorgas was chief sanitary officer of Havana, 1898-1902. In 1901 eliminated he yellow fever in Havana. Was made chief sanitary officer of Panama Canal, 1904, and member of Isthmanian Canal Commission, 1907. Gorgas stamped out yellow fever, malaria, and other infections in the canal zone, making it as infection-free as any region in the U.S. Was made surgeon-general, USA, 1914; major-general 1915. Died 1920.
