Galen, or Galenus, Claudius. Born in Pergamus, in Mysia, about A.D. 130. A very celebrated physician, who practiced first in his native city and afterwards in Rome, where he attended the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Galen was the author of a large number of medical and philosophical writings, of which upwards of 80 are still extant. Galen died about 200.
