Ferdinand I. "The Great," king of Castile, Leon, and Galicia. Was the second son of Sancho III, king of Navarre and Castile, and succeeded to the latter kingdom in 1037. He was one of the most powerful monarchs of his age, and disputed with Henry III of Germany for the imperial crown. Died 1065.
