Dewar, Sir James. Professor of chemistry Royal Institution, London. born in Kincardine, Scotland, 1842. Educated at Dollar Academy and Edinburgh University. With Sir Frederick Abel he invented cordite, and was the first to liquefy and solidify hydrogen. He was awarded the Lavoisier gold medal in 1894 and the Matteucci medal in 1906. Knighted in 1904. Died 1923.
