Danton (dan'ton), George James. A French advocate and republican. Born in 1759. He took a leading part in dethroning Louis XVI, and was a prominent actor in the sanguinary scenes that followed. He became a formidable rival to his associate Robespierre, but was worsted in the strife, and suffered on the guillotine in 1794.
