Chase, Salmon Portland. An American jurist and statesman. Born in New Hampshire in 1808. He was sent to the House of Representatives and to the United States Senate from Ohio, and was elected governor of that state. Appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Lincoln at the outbreak of the Civil War, he conducted the finances with rare skill and success. Appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1864, he held this office at his death in 1873.
