Cook, Captain James. Celebrated English navigator. Born in Marston, Yorkshire, 1728. Best known by his "Voyages Round the World." He conducted three principal voyages, making many important discoveries and explorations in the Australian region and in the North Pacific. After rediscovering the Sandwich Islands, he was killed in a quarrel with the natives of Hawaii in 1779.
