Bancroft, Huber Howe. Historian. Born in Granville, OH, May 5, 1832. Entered bookstore of his brother-in-law, George H. Derby, Buffalo, NY, 1848, and in 1852 went to establish a branch in San Francisco. Collected for Pacific Coast history 60,000 volumes and, with aid of a staff of collaborators, published a historical series of 39 volumes, covering the western part of North America. Died 1918.
