Botticelli (bot-te-chel'-le), Alessandro. Born in 1447. Italian painter. In response to the invitation of Pope Sixtus IV, went to Rome and executed some fine paintings for the chapel of the Vatican. On returning to Florence, he became a devoted follower of Savonarola. Died 1515.
