Averroes, a famous Spanish Arabian philosopher. Born at Cordova, about 1126, of distinguished parentage. In theology and philosophy, he was a pupil of Ibn Tofail, and in medicine, of Ibn Zuhr. Averroes devoted his life to a study of Aristotle, whom he regarded as the greatest of philosophers, and wrote many commentaries which exercised much influence upon the scholastic school in Europe. Died, 1198.
