Alcuin, English theologian. Especially noted as the coadjutor of Charlemagne in his educational reforms. At the invitation of that emperor he left England and settled in France, where he founded several school. But on being made abbot of Tours, he abandoned the court and devoted himself to theology. Born 735, died 804.
